Stress management and rehabilitation support for refugees

The experience of loss, destruction, violence and flight from conflict can have serious negative consequences for mental, emotional and physical well-being. In severe cases, this can lead to an increase in suicide, destructive behavior, burn-out, post-traumatic stress (PTS), depression, and disease, while in less severe cases, individuals may experience functional disability, decreased motivation and performance, and an increased risk of disease and drug abuse.

In response to natural and manmade disasters, IAHV collects funds and goods for immediate material aid and care, provides and supports trauma relief and stress-management programs, and supports long-term rehabilitation.

Our programs

While there are already many approaches to integrating fugitives into society, there is a lack of basic and effective approaches to trauma processing, which makes integration in many areas very difficult. IAHV closes this gap with its HRE programme, which is specifically aimed at fugitives and their experience background, which enables healing, strengthens resistance and enables people to become more self-determined and empowered.

IAHV’s several hour programs deliver measurable results, including rapid and significant reduction in symptoms of PTS, depression and anxiety, and improvement in quality of life for individuals and communities.

IAHV also offers stress management, healing and resilience programmes for professionals (e.g. social workers) working in difficult environments.

Stress Management (HRE – Healing, Resilience, Empowerment)

For survivors of disasters, who have experienced severe physical and emotional trauma, material help alone is not sufficient. Alleviating the trauma and helping people to reconstitute their personal lives is essential. IAHV’s Trauma Relief programs – HRE – teach participants how to process their emotions and stress through the breath, to shift their attention away from reliving the past towards future possibilities. Participants leave the workshop with stress and trauma management techniques, healthy coping strategies, stronger community bonds and a sense of personal power.

Regular follow-up meetings then accompany people in order to integrate what they have learned into everyday life and exchange experiences.

HRE programmes are currently already being implemented in several German cities, usually as a supplement to existing programmes by the Federal States, cities and municipalities and other aid organisations:

  • Dresden
  • Marburg
  • München
  • Rosenheim
  • Witten

Projects in other cities are being planned or prepared.

In Belgium, Greece, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands and Norway, our local IAHV sister organisations are also successfully using this program to care for refugees.

The programs, which are mainly carried out on a voluntary basis, are difficult or impossible to implement without further financial support. Therefore donations are always welcome.

You can also take an active part, e.g. train as an HRE trainer and carry out HRE programs and aftercare.

Your personal support in other areas of our programs and projects or in administration is also welcome. Get in touch with us! (see below)
